Sydney Comedy Festival 2019

During Sydney Comedy Festival 2019, numerous comedians who perform with us have their own comedy shows or group shows.  It’s a perfect opportunity to see these comedians perform longer and perhaps even perform different material from what they may normally perform in one of our shows.

Festival Show 1

2019 Sydney Comedy Festival

Comedians: Peter Green, Peter Meisel, Christina Van Look

The Show: A Rose Between Two Thorns

A Rose Between Two Thorns is three of Sydney’s best comedians just doing stand up comedy.

Two parts sharp comedy, one part beautiful comedy, this show comprises three of Sydney’s most accomplished comedians in one rollicking, fun show!

With over 60 years’ comedy experience between them, Peter Green, Peter Meisel and Christina Van Look return to the 2019 Sydney Comedy Festival for another laugh-inducing run!

At last year’s festival, they were 4 comedians in the show, “The Funniest Comedians You’ve Never Heard Of” but one of them started to be heard of and they had to get rid of him.  So you get fewer comedians, more laughs with their new show!

Festival Dates:

Friday, 26th April  7.00 pm

Saturday, 27th April  7.00 pm

Sunday, 28th April  6.00 pm

Festival Show 2

Hoo Am I? Lizzy Hoo

Comedian: Lizzy Hoo

The Show: Hoo Am I?

Hoo Am I? is Lizzy Hoo’s first solo show, recently performed during a successful run at Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Made from local and imported ingredients, Lizzy Hoo’s debut show delves into life growing up in suburban Brisbane where she loved weekend footy and meat pies but looked like Cassandra off Wayne’s World, Lucy Liu or, quite simply, the Asian Chick.

As a teen, this annoyed Lizzy but in her 20s she started to embrace her ‘Asianness’ because it’s really cool to be part something nowadays. Who wants to be 100% white anymore?

Lizzy once had a whole street in Thailand believe she was a famous Hollywood actress so she could get free pad Thais and tuk tuk rides. She’s a little tired of being called a bad driver and kinda doesn’t want to hear about how many Asian women you’ve dated.

Lizzy is fast making a name for herself on the Australian comedy circuit with large thanks to the antics of her hilarious dad, Chan.

Festival Dates:

Thursday, 9th May  7.00 pm

Friday, 10th May  7.00 pm

Saturday, 11th May  7.00 pm

Venue:

The Enmore Theatre, 118-132 Enmore Rd, Newtown NSW

Festival Show 3

Suren Jayemanne

Comedian: Suren Jayemanne

The Show: I’m Here All Weak

I’m Here All Weak is Suren’s fourth solo comedy show.  Suren continued to grow his successful comedy career last year, with a special on ABC’s Comedy Next Gen, TV spots on Comedy Up Late & Tonightly with Tom Ballard and sell out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Suren has been touted as one of the best acts “on the come up” (a phrase appropriated from hip hop culture, meaning: up and coming) in Australia by people who oughta know. In 2014, Suren was selected for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s showcase ‘The Comedy Zone’. The following year, Suren’s debut stand-up show ‘Eat Praline, Die’, was selected for Sydney Comedy Festival’s FRESH program for emerging acts. In 2017, ABC TV invited Suren to film his stand-up hour, ‘Deus Eczemachina’, for the Comedy Next Gen series.

Suren has performed his three previous solo shows at both the Melbourne International Comedy Festival & Sydney Comedy Festival and made his debut at Adelaide Fringe and Edinburgh Fringe in 2018.

Suren’s shows have been well received by audiences and critics alike, with top reviews and encore performances due to popular demand. Suren has supported Vir Das, Neel Kolhatkar and Aaron Chen among others.

Suren’s comedy has been described as insightful, charming on-point and personable, and most importantly, hilarious. It’s politically savvy and playful, carefully blending the topical with the ridiculous.

Now Suren returns to bring the laughs to your beautiful city of Harbours and traffic jams to perform his latest show: I’m Here All Weak

Festival Show 4

Whiz Bang - SCF

Comedian: Cait Johnson

The Show: Whiz Bang

Whiz Bang is Cait Johnson’s second solo show.

After establishing herself as a regular on the Sydney comedy scene, Cait relocated to Melbourne to peddle her comedy wares before again relocating to Sydney.

Her dry, self-effacing humour has seen her perform both in Australia and overseas in the Sydney and Adelaide Fringe Festivals, the Sydney Comedy Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

The time Cait has spent in recent years split between – and performing in – Australia’s two biggest cities (and comedy scenes) means her material and delivery are nicely honed for your entertainment.

If you like intelligent, articulate, playful comedy, then Cait Johnson’s new show Whiz Bang is one that will tick your boxes!

For her 2019 Sydney Comedy Festival run, Cait has two shows booked at The Factory Theatre.

Festival Dates:

Wed 1st May 2019 – 7:00 pm

Fri 3rd May 2019 – 7:00 pm

Venue:

The Factory Theatre, 105 Victoria Rd, Marrickville NSW

$10 – $15

  1. Like Emily I have been burnt by the festival gala. I paid $70 to see a mediocre show. The (famous) MC started the show pissed and got worse throughout the show. Don’t know if they were all drinking backstage, but the whole show of ‘big name’ comedians got quickly and progressively worse. Only Ronny Chieng and Matt Okine did a good job. I’d much rather go see some shows like these where the comedians are committed to deliver a good show.

  2. I’ve seen a few of these comedians doing shorter performances in your group shows. It will be great to see them doing more comedy in one night! The Comedy Festival’s Gala show can be a bit hit and miss – especially for the price they charge, but it’s nice to see some comedians who you already know are good, doing longer stuff.
