The first time Divya made people laugh was when she was just 4 years old. She wasn’t trying to be funny but was explaining her parents’ contrasting parenting styles: “When I scream at Mum, she locks me in a room. When I scream at Dad, he locks himself in a room.” She was simply telling it as she saw it.
During the pandemic, Divya started writing jokes to entertain herself, and to save herself from boredom. Inspired by shows like Seinfeld, Friends and Frasier, she just wanted to see if she could even make herself laugh. Her friends encouraged her to try comedy once the world opened up again. By day, Divya uses her law degree in her office job, but by night, she tells jokes about millennial life, her eccentric Indian family, being on a Hindu matrimonial website, why she runs away from today’s “run clubs” and freezing her eggs.
She has found being Indian helps with comedy because plenty of material is handed to her just from the bizarre comments from her “interesting” relatives. She also enjoys acting and may have been spotted as Matt Okine’s masseuse in his Stan series ‘The Other Guy’, or as a forensic scientist showing a cigarette butt to internationally acclaimed actress Rachel Griffiths in ‘Dead Lucky’, now streaming on Netflix.
Her old YouTube sketches are available on her channel, and since starting stand-up, she has no plans to slow down. She can’t wait to entertain with her amusing and relatable experiences. And just like that 4-year-old girl, she cannot wait to tell you her honest observations!
