Jenny (spelt Jeanne) Tian is the nicest person in comedy. She gives lifts home, is never short of compliments and is always up for a bit of banter. But that doesn’t mean she’s nice on stage. Don’t be surprised by her sweet demeanour, she’ll cut you down if you deserve it. Straight-up delivery, no-fucks-given attitude, Jenny will get you laughing at things you’ve never laughed at before – like her hymen. What? Yes, it’s true.
When you see her perform, expect to hear stories about her childhood, including the tale of how her dad bought 100 turtles. You can also expect to see some of her comedic drawings! Her mum says she has the artistic flair of a 6 year old but we’ll let you be the judge of that.
Born in Finland and raised in Sydney, her unconventional upbringing gives her plenty of comedic material. Misspelling her name upon birth, Jenny’s parents thought Jenny was spelt J-E-A-N-N-E. We also don’t know how they stuffed that one up. She now lives the rest of her life with a typo for a name. Going by ‘Jenny Tian’ on stage, she’s now treated to endless ‘Jenny on the block’ jokes as well as people quoting Forrest Gump’s famous: ‘I love you, Jenny’.
What does Jenny do outside of comedy? Graduating from UNSW, Jenny has a double degree in a Bachelor of Commerce and Arts. Working full-time, Jenny is slowly making her way out of her crippling HECs debt and learning that her Commerce degree was an ironically poor financial decision. Outside of comedy, she spends most of her days working at the office. During office hours, she mostly shuffles papers to look busy and quotes Brooklyn Nine Nine to her colleagues.
In 2018, Jenny performed with fellow comedians Lizzy Hoo and Claudia Rae in their first split show: ‘Ferris Wheel Club’. Ferris Wheel Club was performed at the 2018 Sydney Fringe Festival.
In 2022, Jenny’s latest solo show, Chinese Australian, was nominated and shortlisted for Best Comedy at Sydney Fringe Festival.
Come and enjoy Jenny’s cracking sense of humour and hopefully, you too, like Forrest Gump, will be proclaiming ‘I love you, Jenny’.
